Philosophy

We tend to think of ourselves as free to behave in whichever way we choose. The reality is that our reactions to most things are largely habitual. Why do some of us respond assertively to every situation, while others spend a lifetime trying to find their voice? And, why are some people so decisive, while others consider all the possibilities before doing anything? It’s because of a curious construct called our personality – a pattern of thoughts, feelings and behaviors. We all have one, and the Enneagram suggests that there are nine, each different points of view, called ‘Types’.

The Enneagram is a system for understanding why people do the things that they do. It provides a surprisingly revealing map of these ways of being in the world. My purpose in teaching the Enneagram is to present the tools, insight and intuitive support people need to find their own path away from these confining habits. My intention is to help people to realize their best self – the one that we all too often miss.

Some people recognize their personality style in the Enneagram immediately. Others find their type after taking a long and careful look at this system. I’ve come to appreciate that people come to this work in their own good time. Meanwhile, we can begin by reflecting upon ourselves. My approach is to hold the space for people who are willing to take a look.

The Enneagram is a psychological system and a spiritual one. It identifies habits we may have picked up during childhood, like thinking in worst-case scenarios, or filling every waking minute with doing something. Patterns get systematically deconstructed when they are observed. We can see that the ways we unconsciously choose to be in the world are merely that, choices. And with recognizing choice, comes real freedom. The results can be profoundly life changing.

Biography

I’ve always been fascinated by people. I was born outside of Boston, raised in Hong Kong and Japan, and educated in England and California. Over time, I’ve had ample opportunity to cultivate my interest in human nature. Still, I have often found people's behavior, across the globe, to be confounding. When I learned the Enneagram, I gradually found a context for the complexities that baffled me about people. I also found a good deal of compassion.

IEA AccreditationI am a certified Enneagram Teacher by David Daniels and Helen Palmer through Enneagram Studies in the Narrative Tradition (ESNT). I have a Bachelor's Degree in Sociology from Occidental College, and I am an accredited teacher of the International Enneagram Association (IEA).

In my everyday life, I live in a Petri dish of sorts with my husband and our three sons. We have the benefit of living and breathing conflict and resolution several times a day. The Enneagram informs each of my relationships more deeply than any other resource I have available to me. It has helped me to be a more patient parent and a more understanding partner. It has helped me to really notice and therefore value people as different from each other and from myself. The Enneagram has allowed me to understand and appreciate my own company with compassion and kindness.
